6 Ways AI Improved My Learning Design

In today's rapidly evolving world, staying competitive means embracing new technologies.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer science fiction – it's a powerful tool that can revolutionize the way we design and deliver learning experiences.
Here are 5 ways learning experience specialists can use AI in their learning design process, along with real-life examples from my experience:

1. Effortless Efficiency
As a calculus facilitator and course creator, I constantly struggled to create a variety of engaging quiz questions. This was especially true because I needed to change the questions every year to maintain academic integrity.
Enter AI!
AI proved to be a valuable tool. It could analyze my learning objectives and generate a bank of questions in various formats, saving me a significant amount of time. For example, I could ask AI to generate a mix of multiple-choice, matching, and open-ended questions that assessed different aspects of the concept of differentiation using power rules.
Not only did AI create questions, it also provided solutions, saving me even more time. Additionally, it excels at creating communication and critical thinking questions, taking my math content creation beyond rote memorization.
2. Smart Feedback and Assessment
Juggling the learning portfolios of 130 clients and 35 projects in my entrepreneurship course, I often felt overwhelmed with providing valuable feedback.
While I had detailed rubrics, learners often struggled to find their specific feedback within them.
Enter AI!
By feeding my rubrics and assessments into an AI tool, I got targeted feedback on exactly where my clients and projects needed improvement based on the rubric criteria.
This immediate, personalized feedback allowed learners to self-correct and refine their skills much faster.
3. Engaging Content Creation
While developing a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training program, my team and I faced the challenge of creating a multitude of realistic workplace scenarios. Even with scenarios in place, the potential client responses to these conflicts felt limitless.
Enter AI!
Integrating AI into our content creation process proved to be a valuable tool. Not only could it help us create these scenarios, but AI also offered a variety of potential responses and user reactions. It even generated options that my team and I hadn't considered.
By anticipating this wider range of potential answers, we were better equipped to address learner questions during the session, ultimately resulting in a more engaging training program.
4. Accessibility for All
Working for a Colombian-American company, I know firsthand the importance of delivering training and resources in multiple languages. While my Spanish is decent, I wouldn't feel confident translating training materials or leading sessions in Spanish. Hiring a full-time translator wasn't an option, and relying on colleagues for translations became a time-consuming burden.
Enter AI!
AI-powered translation tools were a game-changer. They allowed us to translate our training content accurately, making it accessible to our entire staff, regardless of their primary language. Additionally, AI can automatically generate captions for videos and transcripts for audio content, further catering to diverse learners.
5. Research Assistant
As a strong advocate for self-directed learning, I used AI when creating my own personal training program.
For years, I battled lower back pain, herniated discs, and sciatica. I consulted surgeons, specialists, chiropractors, physiotherapists, and even acupuncturists, but often felt like they didn't have the time to personalize a program for my specific needs.
Enter AI!
Determined to find a solution, I embarked on creating a customized 4-week program that I repeat monthly.
While AI cannot replace the expertise of qualified healthcare professionals, it proved to be an invaluable research assistant. Instead of sifting through countless medical journals, fitness magazines, and online forums, AI streamlined this process, scanning vast amounts of data to identify the most recent and evidence-based information relevant to my specific condition.
6. Editing Guru
Who edited this blog, well my good friend AI of course!
Let's talk editing. In the past, I relied on friends or coworkers for proofreading, but they can be busy and might miss something.
Enter AI!
AI editing tools are like having a grammar guru on call 24/7. They can check for typos, fix awkward phrasing, and even suggest improvements to clarity and flow.

Remember, AI excels at automation, but it's not a replacement for human expertise.
AI is a tool, it's about using its capabilities to enhance your learning design skills and create even more effective learning experiences. Embrace AI, and watch your efficiency and the impact of your learning programs grow!
